About 75 Jews demonstrated today outside of Maimonides Hospital in the Boro Park section of Brooklyn to protest alleged “block-busting” on the part of the hospital which they claim will alter the predominantly Jewish character of the neighborhood. According to Jay Kaplan, a spokesman for a group calling itself Citizens for a Better Boro Park, Maimonides, one of the largest Jewish hospitals in the city, has been using “block busting” tactics to get homeowners to sell their property.
The hospital wants the property to house Black and Puerto Rican members of its staff, Kaplan told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. He said the citizens group was demanding that Maimonides desist from the alleged practice and that it give priority to hiring Jews from the neighborhood to fill openings for nurses, ambulance drivers and other positions. No Maimonides Hospital spokesman was available today for comment.
