Maine is suffering an “inestimable” loss of revenue due to the discrimination of private resort owners, according to William Cohen, state chairman of the Maine B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation League Committee.
Citing his experiences as counsel for the Maine State Equal Opportunities Committee, and a number of letters complaining of anti-Jewish discrimination by resort owners in Maine, Mr. Cohen said that prospective Maine vacationers are staying away “in droves.”
Mr. Cohen underlined a statement by Guy P. Butler, executive manager of the state’s Publicity Bureau, who said that “unfortunately” there is no law in Maine requiring a resort owner to serve any one. Everett F. Greaton, executive director of the Maine Development Commission, has pointed out that such discrimination does not reflect official state policy.
