Maj. Gen. Dan Halutz was made Israel’s deputy chief of staff. Halutz, one of the few active veterans of the dogfights of the 1973 Yom Kippur War and a fierce advocate of the controversial air force track-and-kill operations against Palestinian terrorists, also known as targeted assassinations, is considered a leading contender to replace Lt. Gen. Moshe Ya’alon when he steps down as chief of staff in 2006.
