Seven major life insurance companies have reaffirmed, in letters to the New York State Attorney General’s office, a policy of non discrimination in executive training programs.
Attorney General Louis J. Lefkowitz, in reporting the action, said it resulted from talks during the last year between his office and chief executives of the insurance firms. He said the executives had also told him that their officers, department heads and personnel bureaus had been reminded of the policy and that college placement officials had been so reminded.
The Attorney General said the talks had been opened after an investigation into recruiting and promotion of executives at the home offices of some of the companies. Jewish communal agencies had accused the insurance firms of following a policy of declining to place or promote Jews in higher echelon posts.
The seven companies were listed as the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States, the New York Life Insurance Company, the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York, the Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, the Home Life Insurance Company and the Manhattan Life Insurance Company.
