80,000 Men and Women, Over 18, Have Registered (Jewish Telegraphic Agency)
A majority of the Jewish population in Palestine has signified their intention to enter the Kenesseth Israel, the single Jewish community which is to be created for the purpose of the autonomous administration of Jewish religious, cultural and educational affairs, under the provisions of the Palestine Communities Ordinance.
The creation of the Kenesseth Israel has met with the opposition of several groups, notably the ultra-Orthodox Agudath Israel group, which has agitated against a single community and against recognizing the Vaad Leumi, National Council which is to be elected by a universal vote of men and women, objecting to women’s suffrage. The Agudath Israel advocates the creation of separate religious communities or congregations.
Eighty thousand men and women over 18 have registered as willing to join the community. In Jerusalem the registration was 17,900, in Tel Aviv 28,500, in Haifa 7,500, in Tiberias 2,400 and the remainder of the 80,000 in the colonies.
