Dr. Everett R. Clinchy, director of the National Conference of Jews and Christians, today urged the national encampment of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, in an address, to promise the Jews that “the United States will be kept one Island safe from the troubled sea of persecution, hate, contempt and untruths; a land free from anti-Semitism; a stronghold of spiritual decency.”
Herbert Bayard Swope, former executive editor of the New York World, recommended free speech for Nazis, Fascists and Communists, saying that “they convict themselves out of their own mouths.” He declared: “is there such magic in communism or in Nazism or in fascism that they must be feared? I don’t think so. I think they are a sordid, frowsy, unhappy mode of life, and that a comparison with the American system will show up their viciousness and slavery.”
