Only one Jew, Dr. Rosenbaum, has been elected to a government post, as the result of the recent elections. Dr. Rosenbaum has been named a member of the Economic Commission.
Although the Germans have only two representatives in the Sejm, they succeeded in getting their representatives on three commissions. Other minorities also fared well, with the exception of the Jews and the Social Democrats.
The anti-Semitic Christian Democrats obtained most of the “plums”. Their policy is to form alliances with the other minorities and thus isolate and entirely weaken the Jewish group. The German group has already gone over to their side and the Poles are expected to follow soon.
Economic conditions, too, have become worse. The government is planning to close all private bank exchanges. As a consequence, the dollar has risen in value increasing the difficulties of the merchants.
The difficulties in the way of emigration from Lithuania have also been aggravated.
