The Provincial Legislature of Manitoba has adopted the Fair Employment Practices bill introduced by the government, following a stiff fight. Manitoba thus becomes the third province in Canada to enact such legislation.
The bill received a 27-13 vote in the committee of the whole and a similar vote in its final passage. Opponents of the measure had circularized legislators with material of an anti-Semitic nature.
The new law makes it illegal for an employer or trade union to discriminate because of race, color, national origin or creed. The measure does not, however, bar questions concerning race or religion from application blanks.
