An address in parliament dealing with the Jewish question in Roumania, delivered by Minister of the Interior Vajda, attracted wide attention in all parts of the country.
The Minister of the Interior stated that Roumania has for a long time been laboring unjustifiably under the illusion of a “Jewish danger” and therefore all efforts were made to curtail the rights of the Jews. “We however, are fearless. We recognize that the Jewish minority in the country constitutes no danger to the state which has a population of many millions. The Maniu government will remove all injustices in the treatment of Jews which were prevalent until now. By doing so, we will raise Roumanian prestige abroad as well,” the Minister declared. The Maniu government contemplates the recognition of Roumanian Jews as a national minority, together with the other national minorities of Greater Roumania, cables the Bucharest correspondent of the “Jewish Daily Forward” on the basis of an interview he obtained with the Prime Minister.
Anti-Semitism is not a people’s movement in Roumania and has not taken root in the soul of the Roumanian masses, the Prime Minister added, pointing to the fact that in the recent elections which were free, not a single anti-Semitic deputy was elected, although the voters exercised their full right of franchise.
