Steuben Society representatives explained that the assistance of the United German Societies, sponsors of the first German Day celebration, which was suspended by the mayor when it was decided the occasion would be utilized for the dissemination of Nazi propaganda, and the Plattdeutsch societies of Brooklyn had already been secured. They asked that New York Plattdeutsche societies fall in line.
LUTHER EXPECTED TO SPEAK
In the meantime the committee in charge of plans for the Steuben Society’s German Day celebration has announced that no invitations have been issued to address the German Day gathering. It is generally admitted, however, that Ambassador Hans Luther will be invited to speak in accordance with the tradition of the day, which for many years has featured the German ambassador at Washington as principal spokesman at these affairs.
