The National Association of Manufacturers has “no policy of discrimination for or against any racial or religious group” H.W. Prentis, president of the Association stated in a letter to George Gordon Battle, chairman of the Council against Intolerance in America.
Prentis letter was in reply to a letter of inquiry from Battle concerning alleged discrimination of this type. The Battle letter was based upon the photostatic reproduction in the newspaper PM of a letter from the Law Department of the N.A.M. which specified that the applicant for a position must be a Gentile. Prentis said that case was an isolated one not in keeping with the Association’s general policy and assured Battle that “appropriate steps had been taken to prevent any recurrence of such action.”
