A Bucharest dispatch to the Evening Standard said today that rioting was widespread in northern Rumania and that many Jews had been murdered. The dispatch reported that Dr. Axner, a Jewish leader at Dorohoi, his wife and three children were killed in the course of anti-Jewish rioting there.
During the funeral, a report was spread that a Communist meeting was being held in the cemetery. Acting on the report, Rumanian troops were reported to have sped to the cemetery and machine-gunned the mourners.
(Dorohoi, in northern Moldavia, was the scene of a pogrom on the night of July 3 in which 40 Jews were killed and more than 100 wounded, a JTA dispatch from Budapest reported Sunday.)
The Times reported from Bucharest that 15,000 Jews, anxious to return to Bessarabia but refused admission by the Soviet authorities, were barred from readmission to Rumania and were marooned in lighters off Galati in insanitary conditions for several days.
