More than twenty percent of the Jews of Vienna are recipients of charity, Dr. James Bernstein, European commissioner of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society reported on his return from an investigation tour of the Austrian capital. The report was made public yesterday.
“The economic outlook for the Viennese Jews,” said Dr. Bernstein in his report to the HIAS Board of Directors, “is dark. The Jews fear that a compromise by the various Austrian factions will be at the expense of the Jews.
“The report that thousands of Jews have fied Austria is not correct. It is estimated that about 500 Jews and non-Jews escaped to neighboring countries, most of them Social Democrats.”
