The Mapai Party yielded today to demands of its Alignment partner, the Achdut Avoda, and agreed to vote in the Histadrut, Israel’s labor federation, and in the Cabinet in favor of a 5 to 10 percent basic wage increase for industrial workers.
Those percentages topped the 2 to 3 percent hikes considered by Israeli economists as justified by productivity increases and as possibly more than Israel’s inflation-hit economy could absorb without increasing inflationary pressures.
The faculty of the Weizmann Institute of Science expressed a willingness today to go along with a proposal of the academic staffs of the Haifa Institute of Technology and the Hebrew University to forego part of their retroactive wage increases. However, professors at Tel Aviv University decided not to relinquish any part of their retroactive pay.
