With retiring Premier David Ben Gurion participating, the central council of the Mapai Party yesterday unanimously confirmed Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett as its candidate to succeed Mr. Ben Gurion as Premier. Mr. Sharett’s name will now be sent to President Ben Zvi who is empowered to call upon any member of the Knesset to form a government, after he receives notice of the resignation of the Premier.
The central council also confirmed the decision of its political committee to keep Mr. Sharett in his present post as Foreign Minister, as well as Premier. It confirmed the appointment of Pinchas Lavon as Defense Minister and Zalman Aranne as Minister without portfolio.
