The Mapai, Israel’s Labor Party and largest political group in the country, decided at its convention today to support a proposal to split up the activities of Solel Boneh, the Histadrut construction unit. The proposal was advocated by Pinchas Lavon, secretary general of the Histadrut. Only four opposing votes were cast.
An overwhelming majority vote also was recorded for a Lavon move to end the monopoly of transport cooperatives in Israel. The delegates decided to establish new transport services with the participation of existing cooperatives, the Government and other public institutions. The delegates also approved an investigation into the possibilities for “adjustments” throughout the entire cooperative sector of Israel’s economy. Former Premier Moshe Sharett called the decisions “a step toward Mapai’s democratization.”
