Mapai Leads in Israeli Elections; General Zionists Score High in Tel Aviv, Haifa

Although the final results of the Parliamentary elections which took place yesterday throughout Israel may not be known for several days, final returns for Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa and other cities were tabulated today, as were the returns from some of the settlements.

With results from 987 precincts tabulated out of 1,500 throughout the country, Premier David Ben Gurion’s Labor Party was leading in the elections with 38,63 percent of the votes cast. The General Zionist Party, which had campaigned on a program of free enterprise, was second with 19.89 percent of the total.

The standing of all parties in the election, on basis of returns from 987 cut of 1,500 voting precincts, are: (Parties receiving one percent or less are not listed.)

In Jerusalem and the Corridor settlements the final results showed that the religious parties had done better here than in the remainder of the country, while the vote that went to the Mapai and General Zionist Parties was somewhat less than the ratio these parties reached throughout the country generally.

Of a total of 93,722 eligible votes in Jerusalem and the Corridor settlements, 62,105, or 65,45 percent went to the polls yesterday in Israel’s second general election. The final results in this area:

In Tel Aviv, the General Zionist Party showed its greatest strength, running a close second to the Mapai Party. With only 18 polling booths still to report final returns, the results by parties stood as follows:

In Haifa, both the Mapai and General Zionist Parties did slightly better than they did throughout the first of the country. The final results, by percentages, follow:
