Mapam, the left-leaning junior partner in the Labor Alignment, will open its three day converntion here tonight to decide whether to stick with Labor or go its separate way in the next Knesset elections.
The party is split evenly on the issue and a close decision is expected when it votes Saturday night. Veteran Mapam leaders want to remain in the Alignment on grounds that a united labor front is necessary to bring down the Likud government. But the party’s younger elements, who comprise most of Mapam’s Knesset faction, favor a break, though they would continue what they call “cooperation through dialogue” with Labor.
