The Mapam central committee decided today to oppose the contents of the Israeli-American exchange of letters following the visit here of Ambassador James P. Richards, President Eisenhower’s special envoy to the Middle East. The exchange announced Israel’s adherence to the principles of the Eisenhower Doctrine.
As a result of the Mapam committee’s formal decision, its deputies in Parliament are expected to speak and vote against the letters when they are debated next week. The Mapam regards the letters as damaging to the country’s interests, and liable to affect its independence, its security and the security of Jewish communities in some countries outside Israel. The Mapam’s taking an opposition position in Parliament may result in its leaving the coalition government.
