The Mapam political committee adopted a resolution last night that would defer for at least six months a decision as to whether Mapam remains in the Labor Alignment or submits a separate list in next year’s Knesset election. The resolution will be presented to the Mapam convention next month.
The deferral was in the form of an amendment offered by veteran Mapam leader Yaacov Hazan to a resolution calling on the faction to prepare for an independent election list now. The amendment would have Mapam wait until after the Labor Party convention next December to hold a convention of its own to chart its future course.
The resolution, nevertheless, reflected mounting sentiment in Mapam, especially among its younger generation, to quit the Labor Alignment because of sharp differences with the Labor Party on foreign and domestic policies. A recent series of discussions between Mapam and Labor Party leaders aimed at reconciling their differences ended last week inconclusively.
