Aharon Cohen, an expert on Arabic problems and the Middle East, and formerly a leader of the Mapam Party, went on trial here today before a district court of three judges, charted with “maintaining contact with foreign agents and endangering the security of the State.” He pleaded not guilty.
Friday, the three-judge panel visited Mr. Cohen’s home kibbutz, Shaar Haamakim. According to the prosecutor, the accused had met at his home in the kibbutz with foreign agents. Mr. Cohen, author of a number of books on Arab and Middle East problems, told the court that his contact with foreigners was solely for the purpose of scientific study, claiming that he had received books from his visitors that he needed for his scientific work.
