More than 100 adults and youngsters carrying placards marched in single file about 10 feet apart past the Soviet Embassy yesterday to protest the reported beating of the wife of a Jewish inmate in a Soviet prison camp. Mrs. Eva Butman, wife of Hillel Butman, was taken into custody a week ago last Monday at the railway station in Potma, after visiting her husband who was serving a ten-year prison term, and was searched, interrogated and beaten by KGB officials.
The march here was sponsored by the B’nai Israel (Conservative) Congregation of Washington. The demonstrators carried placards saying: “Stop Anti-Semitic Propaganda” and “Free the Butmans.”
