Representatives of the municipal government and of international commerce, as well as thousands of friends and employees, celebrated yesterday the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the great chain of department stores in Germany by Leonhard Tietz, famous for the social welfare work the chain does on behalf of its thousands of employees.
In connection with the celebration, Alfred Tietz, the main stockholder, has donated 400,000 marks for the benefit of the poor. The University of Cologne has conferred upon him an honorary doctor’s degree.
