Marshall’s Memory Honored by Philadelphia Jews on Birthday

The life of the late Louis Marshall proved that the United States was not a melting pot but “rather an edifice constructed of elements which retain their identity” declared Judge Horace Stern, chairman of the Executive Committee of the American Jewish Committee, before one thousand members of Philadephia’s Jewry last night, at a memorial meeting for the noted lawyer and philanthropist, at the Y. M. and Y. W. H. A. Association.

The meeting was on the occasion of Mr. Marshall’s 73rd birthday. Every Jewish organization in the city was represented at the meeting, which was presided over by Rabbi Mortimer J. Cohen, president of the Board of Jewish Ministers Dr. Samuel Schulman, rabbi of Temple Emanu-El, New York, declared that Mr. Marshall had won the right to wear the three crowns of the Jewish legend, the Crown of Knowledge, the Crown of Priesthood and the Crown of Leadership. Speaking of the three stages in Mr. Marshall’s career. Judge Stern told how he had devoted himself to America, the American Jew, and to the cause of the oppressed nationalities of the world.
