Martial law was declared by the Jugoslav government in Petrovo Selo and the vicinity, the scene of the ritual murder agitation on the eve of Rosh Hashanah.
Rosh Hashanah passed quietly but in a painful atmosphere for the Jew-community. On Saturday morning, it was discovered that the previous night the Jewish houses in the town were painted with anti-Jewish hatred inciting inscriptions. Hotels and public inns in the city were closed and people were prohibited from going abroad in the evening unless they were provided with special permits.
The Belgrade government despatched a special ministerial commission to Petrovo Selo with full power to take measures for the maintenance of order and the protection of the Jewish population.
