Official circles today did not confirm reports that martial law would be proclaimed in Palestine after tomorrow’s meeting of the British Cabinet, pointing out that military forces now had ample powers to deal with Arab terrorism.
The Evening Standard said martial law would be proclaimed tomorrow. The Star reported that the Cabinet would drop the Palestine partition plan in favor of a scheme of military government similar to that in Indian frontier provinces, with a “strong man” administration.
The News-Chronicle, charging that the Palestine situation had developed into a state of war as result of weak handling of disorders of the past two years, demanded suppression of terrorism to be followed by the framing of a policy which would be applied fearlessly.
