Governor Theodore R. McKeldin of Maryland called on the Western Powers, including the United States, “to lift the arms embargo against Israel.” The Western world, he said, “has had enough proof that its only reliable friend in the Middle East is Israel.” He spoke at a United Jewish Appeal conference at which communities from Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi and Northern Florida contributed more than $500,000 for the nationwide 1956 UJA drive.
Of the full amount that was contributed, $150,000 was for the United Jewish Appeal emergency Special Survival Fund to help make possible the resettlement in Israel this year of 45,000 Jewish refugees from North Africa, and $350,000 represented gifts to the UJA’s 1956 regular campaign for the support of settlement, welfare and rehabilitation programs in Israel and other countries. Speakers included Label A. Katz, of New Orleans, national cabinet member of the UJA, and Bernard D. Mintz, chairman of the campaign of the New Orleans Jewish welfare fund.
