Jews throughout the State have been called on to take part in a pilgrimage to the grave of Thomas Kennedy, located in Hagerstown, on Sunday, June 24. They will be asked to participate in the observance of the tercenteary of Maryland.
Maccabean Post, American Legion, is sponsoring the ceremonies commemorating the man who fought twenty years in the Maryland Legislature to remove all proscriptions from Jews and Catholics.
Kennedy was a Protestant, but endeared himself to Jews and Catholics when he started his fight to gain for them the right to hold public office.
For more than a century his body lay in the old Presbyterian burying ground at Hagerstown. In 1918, the Independent Order of Brith Sholom, recognizing him as a great defender of the Jews, led the campaign to erect a monument over his new grave in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
Among the speakers at ceremonies will be Governor Ritchie and Representative William J. Randolph of West Virginia.
