German authorities in Denmark have ceased mass round-ups of Jews, but raids on private homes continue, and more Jews are being confined in camps, the Danish Press Service reports today.
The German Minister in Denmark, Werner Best, informed the Danish Foreign Ministry that “measures taken against full Jews do not apply to mixed Jews with less than fifty percent Jewish blood, or to full Jews married to Gentiles.” Nevertheless, so-called “mixed Jews” are taking no chances and many have fled to Sweden One half of all the refugees from Denmark who reached Sweden during the last two days are ‘Aryans’ married to Jews.
The Industrial Council of Employers in Denmark as well as the Danish Federation of Labor have issued protests against the persecution of Danish Jews. Similar protests were submitted to the German Minister in Denmark by the Shipowers Association, the Agricultural Council and many provincial Chambers of Commerce. Submitting to the request of the King of Denmark, the Gestapo yesterday released his personal physician, Prof. Eric Warburg, who was arrested by the Nazis when they started their round-up of Jews two weeks ago.
With all sections of the Swedish people openly condemning the German treatment of the Jews, the Swedish National Socialist Party in Stockholm today issued a proclamation declaring that “the Jews must be regarded as a warring party” because they are agitating against Germany “and are taking part in the war operations of the Allies in countries occupied by Germany.”
“When under these circumstances the Swedish Government makes a demarche to Berlin concerning the Danish Jews, this signifies a clear departure from the spirit and principle of its proclaimed neutrality,” the proclamation reads. “The way in which the Government has acted must be described as an action in the interests of a warring party and as an interference in the domestic affairs of the other party. We protest against the Government’s demarche and demand that the Government refrain from similar demonstrations which can only endanger Swedish neutrality.”
