Jewish inhabitants of the Saar area are now beginning mass emigration from the region, the London Daily Express reported today in a dispatch from its correspondent in Saarbruecken.
Wealthy Jewish business men whose families have been living in the region for generations already have left their homes, after selling their businesses and closing their stores and factories.
As a result thousands of German workers employed by Jewish concerns have been thrown out of work, the Daily Express correspondent declared.
Other Jewish inhabitants of the region, he said, are hurriedly liquidating their business and transferring all their assets.
TERRORIZATION GROWS
At the same time the terror program against the Jews, being carried on by the Nazi-organized German Front in the Saar, is growing from day to day. Jews no longer dare to appear at theatres, movies, concerts and in cafes, it is reported.
They are said to keep strictly to their homes in order to avoid insults by the Nazis, who have grown more and more provocative in their anti-Jewish actions.
Families with a mixed heritage are showing the greatest anxiety to leave the Saar before the date of the plebiscite. Christian German women married to Jewish husbands, the bitterest opponents of Hitlerism in the Saar, are urging their husbands to leave the Saar before it is too late.
On January 13, 1935, the inhabitants of the region will vote whether to rejoin Germany, be annexed to France or continue under the rule of the League of Nations Commission.
