Representatives of the Governor’s office and of the State Attorney General, as well as officials of community relations groups, non-Jewish and Jewish, have lined up solidly here behind a move requesting the State Senate to approve a bill substantially extending the present Massachusetts anti-bias law on housing. The measure had been introduced by the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, which had called on Robert E. Segal to mobilize support for the measure. Mr. Segal is executive director of the Jewish Community Council of Boston.
The new Fair Housing Practices bill would cover all housing not now embraced, excepting only two-family houses where the owner occupied half of the building. The bill would cover single homes when they are offered either for rent or for sale. Scores of proponents of the measures, including also representatives of civil rights and fair housing organizations, urged the Legislature’s Joint Mercantile Affairs Committee to report the bill favorably.
