Maurice Minkovsky, the Polish-Jewish deaf and dumb artist who arrived here several months ago to exhibit his paintings is dead here as a result of an auto accident. He was 49 years old.
Minkovsky was born in Warsaw in 1881. From his very youth he showed artistic inclinations. At the age of 11 he had already painted a portrait of the governor of Warsaw. He attended various art schools in Cracow and Paris and soon became a very prominent artist. Minkovsky attracted particular attention by his paintings of the Bialystok pogrom in 1905 giving impressions of Jewish life of that time. Among the latter the most famous are his “After the Pogrom,” and “The Exiles.” He also did many landscapes and religious paintings on Biblical themes which gained for him a prominent reputation. He received many medals during his various exhibitions and was greatly admired by connoisseurs of art among them the French Minister of Art. Anatole de Monzie, whose portrait he did and who named him Master of Portraits.
The funeral will take place under the auspices of the local Jewish community.
