Maurice Papon, a former minister of France’s Vichy government, was hospitalized with congestive heart failure. The Liberation newspaper reported that Papon will have surgery on his pacemaker Tuesday, and that his family is worried. Papon, 96, was found guilty of crimes against humanity in 1998 for his role in deporting Jews from France while he was secretary general of the Gironde region during the Nazi occupation of France. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but was released into his family’s care in September 2002 because of heath reasons.
