The establishment of the Maxwell Abbell Professorship in Talmud for the College of Jewish Studies, was announced here today. Mr. Abbell, a Harvard-trained Phi Beta Kappan and at one time chairman of President Eisenhower’s Committee on Government Employment Policy, was one of the outstanding leaders of the Jewish community.
The Abbell Professorship in Talmud is the first chair to be established at a Hebrew college in America. Named in honor of Maxwell Abbell, a former board member and officer of the College of Jewish Studies, this chair will be filled this fall by one of the country’s most distinguished Talmudic scholars.
