Mayer “Bubba” Mitchell, a former AIPAC president, has died.
Mitchell died Tuesday evening at home in his native Mobile, Ala., AIPAC officials said. He was 74.
He served as president of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee from 1990 to 1992 and as chairman of the board from 1993 to 1996. Mitchell was representative of how AIPAC broadened its base in the 1970s and 1980s from major Jewish centers to build support across the country. “Bubba Mitchell was a class Jewish activist,” AIPAC’s current president, Howard Friedman, told JTA. “His commitment to the Jewish people knew no bounds. From a small city like Mobile, Ala., he became a national and international leader of the Jewish people.”
