Mayor Israel Rokach of Tel Aviv today protested the Israel Cabinet’s decision last night to unite the cities of Jaffa and Tel Aviv under the name Jaffa-Tel Aviv.
Revealing that he had not been consulted in advance of the decision, the Mayor declared that he would appeal the new name. Granting that Jaffa is a city which trek its history back to Biblical times, Mayor Rokach insisted that Tel Aviv had earned the right to “write its name in golden letters.” He suggested that Jaffa retain its name as a district of a Greater Tel Aviv.
