Mayors of 300 Cities Asked to Ban Anti-jewish Propaganda in Presidential Campaign

The mayors of some 300 cities – all those in the U.S. with populations of more than 300,000 persons – were called on today by the National Conference of Christians and Jews to issue a proclamation urging political leaders in their committees to ban the injection of racial and religious issues in the current campaign.

In a letter to the mayors, Dr. Everett R. Clinchy, Conference president, said, “The campaign managers of the two major political parties Robert Hannegan and Herbert Brownell, Jr., on Sept. 14 committed their parties against the injection of racial and religious animosities into the current political campaign. This was an unprecedented event in our political history but it is essential that the influence of all American leaders be exerted to keep this campaign free from hate and bigotry.

“We now turn to you and to all other members of the U.S. Conference of Mayors for assistance. We are confident that a proclamation along there lines from you to the people of your city would prove to be of immeasurable significance. If you will do so you will be making a vital contribution to the integrity and security of the American system of government.”
