The opinion that the Senate Judiciary Committee will approve the bill to admit 240,000 refugees within two years as requested by President Eisenhower was expressed here today by Senator Arthur V. Watkins, chairman of the Immigration Subcommittee of the Judiciary Committee.
“I think we have enough votes to win Committee approval on the immigration bill sought by President Eisenhower,” Senator Watkins stated. The Judiciary Committee voted yesterday to take a show-down ballot July 8 on the bill. The vote, which was 8 to 4, rescinded a resolution approved last week by the same committee barring consideration of any controversial legislation until July 2nd.
President Eisenhower today asked Senator Pat McCarran, who is seeking to defer action on the bill, to discontinue his opposition to the proposal. After talking with the President, Senator McCarran said he had not been “sold” and he would continue his opposition to the bill. Later today the Senate Judiciary Committee met in secret session to hear testimony on “security matters” involved in the proposed legislation. Meanwhile, it was learned that Senator McCarran has made a further appeal to the Committee for a delay in consideration of the bill.
