Sen. George McGovern called on the Soviet Union today to annul the three-year sentence at hard labor imposed on Vladimir Markman at Sverdlovsk yesterday. “The harshness of this sentence.” Sen. McGovern said in a statement issued at his Washington headquarters, “is reminiscent of the period two years ago, when the world was aroused by the infamous Leningrad trials. The plight of Soviet Jewry cannot be buried under the efforts to expand US-Soviet trade and cultural contact. Soviet officials have repeatedly stated that Jews who wish to emigrate may do so. The world is waiting to see that this promise is carried out.”
