The Labor Zionist Political Education Committee announced today that it supports Senator George McGovern for President. The Committee said the Democratic candidate “stands for the reconciliation of the American people,” “has steadily supported Israel’s security demands in urging that Phantoms be given, not sold,” and has “opposed the Nixon-Rogers plan.” The statement was signed by a number of Labor Zionist leaders in all parts of the country including Dr. Judah J. Shapiro, Dr. Allen Pollack, Dr. Leo Diesendruck and Jacob Katzman.
According to the Committee, McGovern “is calling for the recognition of united Jerusalem as Israel’s capital,” and has been “a strong voice in the Senate against giving the USSR most favored nation status as long as they maintain their inhuman ransom tactics for Soviet Jews who wish to emigrate.” The Political Education Committee is an independent body of individual Labor Zionists. It functions apart from the official Labor Zionist organizations.
