Samuel Roth, alias Rudd, of 114 Tudor place, the Bronx, was convicted of violation of the kosher food law and sentenced to six months in the County Jail and a fine of $50 by Judge Richard K. LaTourette, sitting in the Court of Special Sessions in Monticello, N. Y. Execution of sentence was suspended pending the good behavior of the defendant.
Roth was charged with selling and offering non-kosher lamb meat to Monticello butchers. The evidence was gathered by Shepherd Z. Baum, supervisor of kosher law enforcement of the Department of Agriculture and Markets. This is the first conviction in Sullivan County since the new law went into effect.
While reprimanding Roth, Judge LaTourette declared: “I have only contempt for one who wilfully deceives and defrauds innocent and sincere persons in a matter sacred to them.”
