The Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith has called on the Syrian government to free three members of a Syrian Jewish family who have been held in prison under “difficult conditions without due cause” since December 1985. Two members of the family have medical problems.

In a telegram to Dr. Rafic Jouejati, Syrian Ambassador to the United States, Abraham Foxman, associate national director and head of ADL’s International Affairs Divison, requested a meeting to discuss the case of Shahda Bassou, 65, his son Jack 23, and his nephew, Salim Bassou, 32. The ADL told Jouejati that the elder Bassou suffered a partial paralysis during his imprisonment and was returned to prison after being hospitalized. The nephew has suffered from chest pains.
