An active member of George Rockwell’s American Nazi party has been dismissed from his Job with the Army Map Service, the Defense Department reported today.
Notice of the dismissal of Schuyer Ferris was given in a letter to Congressman Seymour Halpern of New York, who has waged a campaign since last summer to have Ferris ousted from his post. Ostensible reasons for the dismissal as stated in the Department’s letter were “insubordination, absence without leave and on-duty conduct which adversely affected morale and work production.”
Rep. Halpern had demanded that Ferris be fired after it was learned that the map specialist had provided the so-called “hate bus” which toured the South last summer manned by Rockwell’s followers. The Defense Department had previously told Congressman Halpern that such charges were insufficient grounds for dismissal. Ferris’ newest difficulties began some ten days ago when he was arrested in connection with picketing at a movie showing here of the film, “Judgment at Nuremberg.”
