The National Association of Veterans of the Military SS, — the Nazi elite group during the Hitler regime — known from its German language initials as HIAG, has established in this Westphalian city a nation-wide permanent “liaison office.” This office will seek to increase and strengthen the large number of local SS veterans’ groups and to win elimination of the last remaining instances of “legislative discrimination” against former SS members.
Bundestag members of all parties have already expressed support for HIAG efforts to accord long-time SS men the legal right to demand employment in the civil service and to make “pensionable” the years spent in SS uniform. HIAG also hopes to win abolition of regulations which subject former SS members to special screening before they can be accepted by the new West Germany army. More than 3, 000 such officers and enlisted men of the Military SS have applied for service and more than 500 have been accepted to date.
