Members of the U.S. Congress are urging the FBI to conduct an extensive background check on a controversial American Muslim leader appointed to serve on a counterterrorism commission. Seven lawmakers sent a letter to FBI Director Louis Freeh asking him to examine statements made by Salam Al-Marayati before giving him security clearance. Jewish groups say that Al-Marayati, who heads the Los Angeles-based Muslim Public Affairs Council, has made statements justifying terrorism against Israel and the United States.
