The 12-member United Nations Economic Survey Mission of the Palestine Conciliation Commission, headed by Gordon R. Clapp, chairman, arrived at Lydda Airport today. The delegation included three vice-presidents of the mission–Sir Desmond J. Morton, of Britain; Eric Labonne, of France; and Kamil Gokkan, of Turkey.
Heavy guards for the mission were arranged as a routine precaution. All parties in Israel–including the former underground groups–are aware that the mission is coming to Israel to plan the resettling of Arab displaced persons and there is no opposition to this principle.
(The Jewish Telegraphic Agency bureau in Jerusalem received a telephone call from the so-called “Fatherland Front” denying press reports that it issued a warning to “private persons” not to approach United Nations headquarters. “We do not dream at present of any such measures and the anonymous call was probably a hoax,” the group’s representative said.)
