Three members of Joseph Darnand’s Vichy militia who admitted they assassinated Georges Mandel, Colonial Minister in Leon Blum’s cabinet, will soon be tried before a special tribunal here.
Three senior Vichy police officers, including the chief of the Versailles police, who aided in the assassination, are also to be tried. It is believed that the murder occurred at the Forest of Fontainebleau, near Paris. According to a Vichy announcement, Mandel was killed July 14 while being transferred by automobile from one prison to another.
The Germans in southern France captured and put to death Benjamin Cremiaux, well-known French Jewish scholar who had been serving as a leader of the Maquis, it was learned today. Cremieux, who was 58 years old, was a grand-nephew of Adolphe Cremicux, French Justice Minister who in 1871 issued the famous Cremieux decree granting Algerian Jews French citizenship.
