A long-planned memorial for the 6,000,000 Jewish martyrs who died at the hands of the Nazis in Europe during World War II is getting under way and will be erected in Philadelphia in 1963, it was announced here today. First planned by the Association of Jewish New Americans in Philadelphia, the memorial will be erected at the entrance to the new Gratz College building here. It is being sponsored by the Committee for the Monument in Memory of the Six Million Martyrs.
The monument will stand 18 feet tall and will be designed and executed by the internationally known sculptor Nathan Rappaport. Mr. Rappaport also created the huge monument to the Warsaw Ghetto in Poland and a monument in Israel in memory of Mordecai Anilewicz, the great leader of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. The Association of Jewish New Americans is made up of over 350 families who came to the United States as refugees from Nazism.
