A memorial service has been held over a mass grave of 40 Jewish victims of the Nazis at Degerdorf, in Upper Bavaria, on the occasion of the unveiling of a stone in memory of the unnamed dead.
The services were attended by representatives of Jewish communal organizations, the Association for Christian-Jewish Cooperation and the Bavarian Restitution Office–which has pledged to maintain the grave–and a number of inmates of the Foehrenwald camp for Jewish DP’s.
The grave is filled with the remains of men and women who died as a result of starvation, ill health and frightful weather conditions during a “death march” from Bavarian concentration camps to Austria in 1945. Some of the victims were shot by the S.S. guards because they were moving too slowly and delaying the “death column.”
It was reported from Frankfurt that hooligans have overturned 47 gravestones in the Jewish cemetery at Tauberbischofshiem, southeast of there. No trace of the perpetrators has been discovered by the police.
