More than 300 guests, most of them Jewish communal leaders, turned out tonight to pay homage to Mendel N. Fisher at a dinner arranged on the occasion of his completion of 25 years of service as executive director of the Jewish National Fund of America. The testimonial dinner was given by the board of directors of the JNF at the Commodore Hotel.
Dr. Israel Goldstein, honorary president of the Jewish National Fund, presented Mr. Fisher, in the name of the JNF board of directors, with a Scroll of Honor in appreciation of 25 years of devoted service to the cause of Israel, and Albert Schiff, treasurer of the JNF, handed to Mr. Fisher a ceramic plaque featuring the 12 signs of the Zodiac, a gift received from the Artists’ Colony of Ein Hod near Haifa, Israel. Mr. Schiff also announced the establishment of two annual scholarships in the name of Mendel Fisher for students at the Ein Hod Art Colony.
The speakers included Dr. Harris J. Levine, president of the Jewish National Fund of America, who was toastmaster; Simcha Pratt, Israel Consul General in New York who extended greetings in the name of the Israel Government; Mrs. Rose Halprin, chairman of the American Section of the Jewish Agency for Israel; Rabbi Irving Miller, chairman of the American Zionist Council; Label Katz, president of B’nai B’rith; Louis Segal, chairman of the Testimonial Dinner Committee and member of the Jewish Agency executive and Rabbi Max Kirshblum, member of the Jewish Agency executive and former president of Mizrachi. Messages of greetings and high praise for Mr. Fisher were received from Israel and from numerous personalities in the United States.
